On 27 February 2016, we marked the third anniversary of the passing of my beloved teacher, Mr. Ong Lip Tat. It was a day of reflection, celebration, and deep nostalgia as his students and family members gathered for a Memorial Dinner to honor his incredible life and the profound impact he had on the music world. Mr. Ong was not just a teacher but a mentor, guide, and a shining beacon of inspiration for all who had the privilege of learning from him.

Mr. Ong Lip Tat was a renowned Singaporean pianist known for his passion, dedication, and artistry in both teaching and performance. His influence extended far beyond the piano keys, leaving an indelible mark on his students and the broader music community in Singapore and beyond. His legacy lives on in the countless students he nurtured, many of whom have gone on to become accomplished musicians themselves, carrying forward the values of discipline, passion, and excellence that Mr. Ong instilled in them.

A Teacher Who Inspired Greatness

Mr. Ong’s teaching philosophy was rooted in his love for music and his unwavering belief in the potential of his students. He had an extraordinary ability to unlock that potential, encouraging each of us to go beyond what we thought was possible. His lessons were always filled with passion, precision, and a genuine love for the art of piano playing. He understood that music was not just about mastering technical skills but also about telling a story and evoking emotions in the listener.

For Mr. Ong, music was life. He approached every piece with reverence, and that dedication was contagious. His students didn’t just learn to play the piano—they learned to feel the music, to interpret it, and to bring it to life in ways that could touch the hearts of the audience.

A Legacy of Excellence

During the Memorial Dinner, we shared stories about Mr. Ong’s life and career, reminiscing about the countless ways he had touched our lives. It was a reminder of his enduring influence, not just as a pianist but as a teacher who had given so much of himself to ensure that his students excelled. Even though he is no longer with us, his legacy continues to thrive in the music world, thanks to the values he imparted to each of us.

Mr. Ong’s family was deeply moved by the gathering, and it was clear that his influence extended well beyond the classroom. His passion for music and teaching continues to inspire us all, and we remain committed to upholding the standards of excellence that he set.

A Personal Memory: Playing With My Teacher

I often find myself reminiscing about my time with Mr. Ong, especially the moments we shared on stage. One particular memory stands out—performing Lutoslawski’s Variation on a Theme by Paganini with him at Victoria Concert Hall during one of his students’ concerts. It was a thrilling experience to perform alongside my mentor, and that performance remains one of my most cherished memories. Playing duets with Mr. Ong was always special because he brought out the best in me, and the energy we shared on stage was palpable.

As I reflect on the years I spent learning from Mr. Ong, I am reminded of the profound impact he had on my life and career. His passion, dedication, and love for music continue to inspire me every day.

Today, as I think back on my beloved teacher, I am filled with gratitude for the lessons he taught me, both in music and in life. Mr. Ong Lip Tat’s legacy will live on through all of us who were fortunate enough to be his students. He may no longer be with us, but his spirit plays on, making beautiful music with the angels.
