The Joy of Teaching Music: Min Min Tay's Personal Journey in Classical Music

The Joy of Teaching Music: A Personal Journey

Teaching music has been one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences of my life. There is no other profession that offers the same level of personal satisfaction, growth, and connection that teaching does. As a piano teacher, I have had the pleasure of guiding students through both private piano lessons and accelerated theory classes, watching them grow not only as musicians but also as individuals who develop a deep appreciation for music.

One of the greatest joys of teaching music is witnessing that moment when a student finally grasps a concept that had once seemed challenging. It’s an indescribable feeling when a student’s eyes light up with understanding, as if a door has opened, allowing them to explore new dimensions of their musical journey. Whether it's mastering a tricky passage on the piano or understanding the structure of a music theory concept, these small victories are what make teaching such a gratifying profession.

A New Chapter: Accelerated Theory Classes

After the March Theory exams, I am thrilled to announce the reopening of my accelerated theory classes. This next intake marks the beginning of another exciting chapter in my journey as a music educator. Some of my current students, along with a few new faces, have already signed up, and I’m eager to embark on this new adventure with them.

Teaching music theory is a different challenge from teaching practical piano, but it is equally enriching. Theory classes help students understand the structure, rules, and framework behind the music they play, giving them the tools to become not just performers, but well-rounded musicians. Music theory serves as the foundation upon which all musical learning is built, and when students grasp these concepts, their musical abilities flourish.

It is incredibly rewarding to see students develop a deeper understanding of how music works. When they realize that music is not just about pressing the right keys at the right time, but about understanding intervals, chord progressions, scales, and harmonic structures, their entire approach to playing the piano changes. It becomes more thoughtful, more purposeful, and more expressive. The spark of realization in their eyes when they comprehend these abstract concepts is a moment I always cherish as a teacher.

What is Accelerated Music Theory?

You may be wondering, "What exactly is accelerated music theory?" Accelerated theory classes are designed to help students learn music theory at a faster pace, allowing them to cover more material in a shorter amount of time. These classes are ideal for students preparing for exams or those who wish to deepen their theoretical knowledge quickly. The curriculum is intensive, but it is tailored to ensure that students not only understand the content but also apply it in their practical playing.

Through accelerated theory, students can master concepts that might take longer in traditional settings, such as chord progressions, cadences, intervals, and modulation. The program is designed to challenge students while also providing them with the support and resources they need to succeed. The Joy of Teaching Music Theory

As I prepare for this new intake of students, I can’t help but reflect on how meaningful it is to teach music theory. There’s something uniquely satisfying about helping students understand the language of music. Theory might seem daunting at first, but once students start to see the patterns and logic behind it, they gain a newfound confidence. It's like solving a puzzle, and once the pieces fall into place, the satisfaction is immense.

The accelerated music theory classes give students the opportunity to achieve this understanding in a condensed time frame. By offering this intensive program, I’m able to push students to their full potential while ensuring they remain engaged and motivated. It’s wonderful to see them progress, not just in their theoretical knowledge, but in their overall musical abilities.
